Outsourcing news from Nigeria
Outsourcing is a strategic management tool that enhances focus and effective service delivery, letting the organizations to focus on their core competence areas. “The concept of outsourcing has been said not to be an entirely bad idea, only if organizations and practitioners embrace the culture of fairness, objectivity, and transparency in dealing with different categories of workers operating under this kind of arrangement. This was the position of the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPMN), Mr.Musa Rabiu, during an interview with Daily Sun in Lagos recently.
As an example, The Telecommunications sector requires hiring skilled people the areas of Information Communication Technology (ICT), and Electronics Engineering. That is their core competence area. After all these professionals have been taken care of, the need to outsource the non-core competence area like; Drivers, Cleaners, janitors, Security and Cooks now comes into play.
Outsourcing also helps minimizing the human resource management practice and helps an uncompromising approach on the standard of people employed. On the flip side, the implication of this trend is that it generates tension between management and the labour unions, because they know the workers are not on the company’s pay-roll and the union will have less voice to discuss issues with management, stressing that the company involved will also have less influence on them in terms of commitment and as such cannot get the needed productivity.
On the way forward, he advised that organizations should consider four basic essentials to retain a worker; Right pay, Work environment, Career Prospect and learning and development. All these, he said if properly harnessed would promote good work ethics and career growth.
